Weighing scales

Weighing scales are the most important and indispensable piece of equipment required in almost all walks of life. By definition: it is a device for measuring the weight of an object (the gravitational attraction between the object and the Earth). They are often used to measure the weight of a person, and in many industrial and commercial applications, they are used to determine the weight of things ranging from feathers to loaded tractor-trailers.


A weighing scale is a device for measuring the weight of an object. Most are Spring Scales and others are just balances that are calibrated to display weight, since an object's weight is directly proportional to its mass. Weighing scales are often used to measure the weight of a person, and in many industrial and commercial applications, scales are used to determine the weight of things ranging from feathers to loaded tractor-trailers.

A spring scale is a weighing scale used to measure force, such as the force of gravity, exerted on a mass or the force of a person's grip or the force exerted by a towing vehicle. This force is generally measured in newtons, for which one newton corresponds to the weight of about a tenth of a kilogram of mass, or about the weight of an apple. The spring scale can also be correctly called a Newton Meter, because it is used to measure newtons.

The spring scale material is simply a spring fixed at one end with a hook to an attach an object at the other. It works by Hooke's Law, which states that the force need to extend a spring is proportional to the distance that spring is extended from its still position. Therefore the scale markings on the spring scale are equally spaced.

Spring scales can be calibrated for the accurate reading of mass in the location in which they are used, but many spring scales are marked right on their face "Not Legal for Trade" or words of similar import, due to the approximate nature of the theory used to mark the scale. Also, the spring in the scale can permanently stretch with frequently used.


During the olden days the measuring scale was a means of measuring by making a pointer moving along graduated marks. These articles transcended down the centuries and have evolved into a wide plethora of its kind.

There are two types of Weighing Scales namely Electronic & Mechanical, and the former is more popular if it's ease of use and adaptability and less human interference. Other types are the spring scales wherein there is a pulley, onto which the weight is hung via a hook and the pointer needle moves to the gradient reading according to the weight. Manual scales are the ones that have two plates are hung that are balanced in the middle; predetermined weights are placed on one plate and the load is measured accordingly.


Floor scales

Floor scales are the toughest and strongest ones that are used for weighing exceptionally huge loads. They are low-profile scales which are used for a wide variety of industrial solutions with weighing ranges from 500 kg to more than 10,000 kg. Combining exceptional accuracy with durability to stand up to tough industrial environments, they are perfect for a wide range of industrial weighing applications like Veterinary Clinics, Farms or Labs. They are place in tandem with the floor surface, (logical, since huge loads are practically impossible to be lifted every time) and hence the name. Platform Scales

Platform Scales are the second best in terms of load handling. They have a raised platform, unlike the floor scales, on which medium to heavy utility weights are measured. They find their place in medium shipments and air cargo sector that face an arguably moderate flow of weight unlike the jumboes. Shops, supermarkets and timber merchants, small scale industries use these scales for their daily routine. They can measure approximately between 1000kg to 5000kg.

Bench Scales

Bench Scales are designed with functionality and affordability in mind. One of the most important tools in a shipping and receiving dock is a good bench scale. Packages going out and goods coming in must be checked and weighed for accuracy. Post offices and courier sorting offices use them for weighing parcels and letters, goldsmiths use these scales for convenience and credibility. Compact in size and frame, they can just weigh a few grams to a couple of kilograms.

An analytical balance is an instrument used to measure mass to a very high degree of precision. The weighing pan of a high precision (.1,.01, mg or better) analytical balance are inside a transparent field with doors so dust does not collect and so any air currents in the room do not involve the delicate balance. The use of a Vented Balance Safety Enclosure that has uniquely designed acrylic airfoils allows a smooth turbulence-free airflow that prevents balance fluctuation and the weighing of mass down to 1?g without fluctuations or loss of product. Also, the model must be at room temperature to avoid natural convection from forming air currents inside the enclosure, affecting the weighing.


Analytical precision is achieved by maintaining a stable load on the balance beam, by subtracting mass on the similar side of the beam that the sample is added. The final balance is achieved by using a little spring force rather than subtracting fixed weights.
